A Critics Thought on the Invention of Lying...

A man named Mark (Ricky Gervais ) lives in an alternate reality in which lying doesn’t exist. Everyone tells the truth and only the truth. In a world where everyone is blunt and truthfully honest, Mark discovers the concept of lying. With the ability to lie, he takes advantage of everyone, since they all assume he’s telling the truth. He immediately lies himself to fame and fortune but soon realizes how out of control dishonesty can be. Even with his superiority and power of lying, he cannot lie himself into the heart of the woman he loves.

The following review will contain many spoilers. MovieTradition gives The Invention of Lying a 4 out of 10 for many reasons. The only only good thing about this movie was its occasional cynical humor. There were spots of hilarity that makes this film deserve a few rating points (hence the 4) but other than this MovieTradition was quite dissapointed at the outright target this film put on Religion, Creation, Existence, and pretty much Hope of mankind. The story goes like this: There is a man that pretty much is an outright loser in life, out of shape, no money, no mate, and no hope; and he lives in a world that knows no lie so everything spoken is true. They have an inablity to tell a non - truth. The films builds up with a few humorous antics that lead to the man discovering he can lie and then doing something that trully surprised MovieTradition. While his mother is dying the main character decides to make her feel better about going to a "realm of nothingness" (as quoted from the film) he is going to lie and create the story of Heaven, Hell, God and eternity. Once doing this people proceed to hear about this so called after life and flock to him to hear what they believe to be truth. After this there are many out right tagetted blasphemous shots at religion, God (who is referred to as the 'man-in-the sky') and hope for eternity. This film in my opinion was entertaining in the beginning and outright atheistic in the ending, and the point is it would not have been as much of a turn off it it wasn't "in your face" offensive. MovieTradition recommends this film for no - one. Sorry but this was just not our type of entertainment. If you enjoy cynically atheistic targeted films then this is for you... if not - please do not go.
