A Critics Thought...

MT's Rating of Whip it: 6 out of 10

Drew Barrymore makes her directorial debut with Whip It!, the story of an ex-beauty pageant contestant named Bliss (played by Juno's Ellen Page) who leaves her crowns behind after joining a roller-derby team. While her mother would prefer that Bliss unlace her skates and step back before the judges, the rebellious teen instead seeks the wisdom of rowdy mentor Malice in Wonderland (Kristen Wiig) in learning the tricks of the circuit track. The Mandate Pictures production was written by roller derby star-turned-screenwriter Shauna Cross.

MovieTradition gives Whip It a 6 out of 10 for its stable plot line, great acting and smooth direction. This film is mainly a story about a girl who is not the small town beauty queen type... and she sets out to find out just who she is during this film. The skating in this film was exceptional and the acting was up to par the whole way through. The main problem MovieTradition has with this film is the forgettable factor and the demographic. Not to much of a memorable film. It has been done before... its the story of the young girl who has to "find" herself. Also the film is recommened to any girl ages 13 and up who is looking for an inspirational "find your dream" film and will also appeal to some men over the age of 16 who are into the actual sport of skating. MovieTradition recommends this film for a group of girl friends to go out and see, it will definitly inspire you to do something great, but other than you... everyone else just save your money and wait for the BluRay.
